This division is responsible for conducting chemical analysis of all geological samples (rocks, coal, minerals and water) in order to determine the chemical and physical composition of the samples. The division also conducts applied research on the utilisation of indigenous mineral resources and sensitise the general public on the latest developments in the mineral sector.

The research and laboratories division runs four laboratories;

2. Industrial Mineral Research and Ceramics, Zomba and Lithipe
3. Lapidary, Zomba
4. Kanengo Coal Analysis Laboratory, Zomba
