1. What procedures are followed to explore and mine minerals in Malawi?

To explore for or mine minerals, an individual/company is required to acquire an Exploration or Mining license. The Ministry offers the following mineral rights:

  1. Reconnaissance Licenses (RL) - issued for 1 year over an area not exceeding 100,000 square km;
  2. Exploration License (EL) - issued for 3 years, with allowable two-term extensions, over an area not exceeding 2,500 square km;
  3. Medium-Scale Mining License (MML) and Large-Scale Mining Licence (LML) - issued for not more than 25 years with allowable term extensions;
  4. Retention Licence (RTL) - issued for not more than 5 years over an area not exceeding 25 square km
  5. Licenses for Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) - Artisanal Mining Permit, Reserved Minerals Licence (RML), Non-Exclusive Prospecting Licenses (NEPL), Small-Scale Mining License (SML);
  6. Export Permits.
